There's a lilac in the back orchard. I don't know how old it is. Maybe a century old, or a century and a half, or somewhere in between, or maybe less. The Perrys planted it, or maybe the Gouldens. It blooms in early June, and now its fragrance fills the house. I take away the oil lamp that has been such a comfort on cold nights, and in its place I put an old pitcher of lilacs. It's one more way to notice the changing season.
